熱帶病的分布很廣泛，一般具有以下特點：①限于熱帶，如非洲錐蟲病、美洲錐蟲病、埃及血吸蟲病、曼氏血吸蟲病、盤尾絲蟲病、黃熱病等；②以熱帶為主，如瘧疾、霍亂、登革熱、絲蟲病等主要分布于熱帶地區，非熱帶地區也有零星分布。
世界衛生組織重點研究的6大熱帶病,一般多分布于熱帶濕潤地區,具體分布情況各不相同:①瘧疾。分布很廣，一般見于北緯60°至南緯30°之間的地區。主要分布在東南亞、南亞、阿拉伯半島、整個非洲、中美和南美大部分地區。這些地區的地理環境很適合瘧原蟲的傳播媒介按蚊的孳生繁殖，因此瘧疾盛行。中國除青藏高原外，瘧疾幾乎遍及全國。海拔超過2700米的高山高原，按蚊不能生長繁衍，即無瘧疾流行。②血吸蟲病。熱帶和亞熱帶地區的稻田、河渠、水塘等，是血吸蟲中間宿主釘螺繁殖生長的良好環境，也是血吸蟲病傳播的主要地區。因此血吸蟲病主要分布于北緯36°至南緯34°之間的熱帶、亞熱帶地區。中國的血吸蟲病主要分布于水系河網密布的長江和珠江中、下游地區。③絲蟲病。主要分布于東半球北緯41°至南緯28°、西半球北緯30°至南緯30°一帶。中國的絲蟲病主要分布于蘇、魯、皖、豫四省毗鄰的廣大平原區。④錐蟲病。又分非洲錐蟲病和美洲錐蟲病。非洲錐蟲病又叫昏睡病，由采采蠅傳播布氏錐蟲使人、畜得病。采采蠅主要生活于濕熱的非洲叢林、大草原和河谷地帶，因此昏睡病主要分布于非洲熱帶的濕熱地區。美洲錐蟲病是由克氏錐蟲引起的一種自然疫源性疾病，以晝伏夜出、咬人吸血的錐椿為主要媒介，是中南美洲熱帶地區的嚴重疾病。⑤利什曼病。廣泛分布于熱帶、亞熱帶及溫帶地區。中國的利什曼病發源于西北地區，分布于北至內蒙古，西至新疆，南至湖北、江蘇等省的部分地區。⑥麻風病。流行甚廣，以熱帶及亞熱帶地區為主要分布區。
