組蛋白是真核生物中負責染色體纖維核小體結構的基本核蛋白。這種結構由約146 bp的DNA包裹在核小體周圍，核小體是由四種核心組蛋白（H2A、H2B、H3和H4）中的每一種組成的八聚體。染色質纖維通過連接組蛋白H1與核小體之間的DNA相互作用進一步緊密，形成高階染色質結構。該基因無內含子，編碼組蛋白H3家族的一個成員。該基因的轉錄本缺乏多核苷酸序列；相反，它們包含回文終止元素。

該基因位于染色體1上的組蛋白簇中。該基因是集群中四個重復的組蛋白基因之一；該記錄代表端粒拷貝。抗組蛋白H3是對染色質修飾劑、染色質研究、組蛋白和修飾組蛋白以及表觀遺傳學研究感興趣的研究人員的理想選擇。
